“Just over a year ago, [USCRI clients] Ghazweh Aljabooli and her husband and five children landed at the Des Moines airport and became the first refugees from Syria’s ongoing civil war to settle in Iowa. In their first summer in America, each step felt momentous.” Over the last year the family has worked hard to live their own American dream. So far, they have found a new apartment near better schools and even learned to drive, investing in a used car for the family. While their new lives in Iowa are all they could have hoped for, coming from their war torn Syria, they still have far to go. Although, Ghazweh says that she now has renewed hope for her children.
