500 students are currently enrolled in the free courses through the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, a field office of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. Tuesday’s class was joined by the Governor of Vermont.
“Thank you on behalf of Vermonters for being Vermonters,” Governor Peter Shumlin (D–Vermont) said to the class. Shumlin has been an outspoken supporter of refugees.
350 refugees are expected to come to Vermont by October 2016, according to Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program Director Amila Merdzanovi.
