In September, USCRI Detroit Director Tawfik Alazem and its field office staff welcomed a team from the Netherlands. Part of the Stichting De Verre Bergen (SDVB) foundation, the team works in the field of philanthropy; SVDB foundation is dedicated to making Rotterdam, Netherlands, a welcoming home to over 200 Syrian refugee families and empowering and assisting these families in their participation in Dutch society as soon as possible. Their organization was participating in the Funders’ Forum for Sustainable Cities Study Visit in Detroit and Flint, Michigan. The international team planned ahead to meet with USCRI Detroit staff and was very interested in learning more about the ways USCRI Detroit helps refugees begin new lives and to explore the possibility of exchanging knowledge in the future. The discussion helped the visitors have a better understanding of the successful refugee resettlement and refugee employment in the Detroit area and gave them the opportunity to hear about challenges, opportunities, and successes.
