On May 31st – June 3rd 2016, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants hosted a national conference in Washington, D.C.
During the USCRI 2016 Annual Conference, 18 network agencies advocated with a total of 51 Congressional offices, including 21 Senators and 30 House Representatives of 16 states. This year’s Hill visits included new Allied Agencies, La Maestra Community Health Centers, Lao Family Community Development and Nile Sisters Development Initiative. USCRI hosted a roundtable with Representatives Torres, Cardenas, McGovern and Frankel, where USCRI Central America office Coordinator Eunice Olan briefed Congressional staff. The USCRI Central America office also met with the offices of Senators Boxer and Kaine.
During the meetings, the USCRI Network asks to members of Congress included support for the introduction of the Refugee Protection Act of 2016 led by Senator Leahy expected to be introduced in coming weeks, support for the Freedom of Religion Act in the House, support for increases in refugee funding and legislation that will improve the lives of refugees, telling the Administration to stop the raids on vulnerable Central American women and children and support Syrian resettlement this year and next. After meeting with USCRI partner agency, the Miami Youth Co-op, Representative Frankel signed onto the Freedom of Religion Act.
