A Step Forward

With his new prosthetic leg, USCRI Erie client Abdallah can’t stop grinning from ear to ear!

As a teenager, Abdallah fled from his home country of Eritrea with his brother. They were headed to Sudan in hopes of a better life, but Abdallah fell off the truck when they were fleeing and broke his leg. He was captured by smugglers who kept him in captivity for several months and during this time, his leg became infected. He was finally sent to a UN medical facility in Egypt, where the leg had to be amputated.

After being resettled in Pennsylvania, Abdallah asked his case workers if they could help him get a wheelchair and was surprised to learn that he might be able to walk again with the use of a prosthetic. After months of waiting, the new leg finally arrived! Abdallah is thrilled to have this new strength and independence and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of his tireless and compassionate USCRI case worker Fadel.
