USCRI Kenya first opened its doors in 2024. Since then, our offices in Nairobi and Kakuma Refugee Camp have allowed us to implement programs for refugee girls and conduct our policy and advocacy work in East Africa.
For over five decades, USCRI has advocated on behalf of refugees warehoused in camps indefinitely, particularly in East Africa. Today, USCRI’s advocacy in Kenya responds to severe cuts to humanitarian aid and encourages the implementation of the Shirika Plan, a promising shift to provide greater agency and dignity to refugees with a possibility of self-reliance.

Keep Girls Dreaming Initiative

Keep Girls Dreaming is a response to an urgent humanitarian crisis. In Kakuma Refugee Camp, hundreds of thousands of refugees, mostly children, struggle to make ends meet. Cuts to humanitarian assistance have ended many services and the delivery of essential supplies to Kakuma, including basic food rations and sanitary pads. Widespread malnutrition affects refugee girls in particular, who are also the most at risk of abuse, cross-border kidnapping, forced labor, and other forms of exploitation.
As USCRI Kenya’s flagship program, Keep Girls Dreaming focuses on the needs of unaccompanied refugee girls, those in the camp without a parent or guardian, through holistic services and building the capacity of grassroots organizations that empower refugee women and girls. This support allows girls to pursue their aspirations—to receive an education, to go to university, to become a teacher, a lawyer, or a doctor.
As conditions worsen in Kakuma, the initiative expands. Keep Girls Dreaming strives to ensure that these girls are nurtured, protected, and empowered in the face of adversity.
“Empowering these girls begins with presence...The potential of these girls should not be lost to hunger, early marriage, fear, or lack of dignity...”
– Sylvia Maru, Keep Girls Dreaming Program Manager
