Celebrating a Legacy: Honoring Eskinder Negash with a Lifetime Achievement Award

Over the weekend, USCRI’s President and CEO was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the African Leadership Conference in Minnesota for his incredible leadership for over 40 years. This Lifetime Achievement award is a testament to his extraordinary career dedicated to the service of refugees and immigrants around the world, underscoring his profound impact on the field of humanitarian work.

As a refugee from Eritrea, he has devoted his career to addressing the needs of refugees and immigrants. His career began with hands-on experience at the International Rescue Committee in Los Angeles. In 2002, he joined the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Over the next several years, Eskinder’s innovative approaches and strategic vision were instrumental in expanding the organization’s reach and impact. His tenure as Executive Vice President/CFO and later as Chief Executive Officer / President was marked by significant growth, both in terms of programmatic scope and financial sustainability. Under his leadership, USCRI expanded its service network domestically and internationally, forging new partnerships and securing substantial funding to advance its mission.

Eskinder is a global advocate and thought leader whose influence extends far beyond the U.S. He has represented the U.S. government and various organizations at international forums, including the United Nations and numerous global conferences. His contributions to global discussions on migration and refugee resettlement has been recognized with multiple awards and honors, including the International Rescue Committee’s honor as one of ten distinguished figures whose stories embody the refugee journey.

Throughout his career, Eskinder has been a staunch advocate for humane public policies and effective programs that address the needs of migrants and refugees. His dedication to creating meaningful change is evident in his roles across various organizations, from managing significant budgets and large teams to nurturing relationships with foundations, governments, and international bodies.

Eskinder’s achievements reflect his professional success and his commitment to improving the lives of those he serves. His impact is felt deeply by the communities he has supported and by the many individuals who have found hope and a new beginning through his work.
