Webinar: Mobility and Climate Change

December 17, 2024

To adapt to a changing environment, increasing numbers of people will be on the move. But current legal frameworks have significant protection gaps. While international refugee law has the potential to be a crucial mechanism in responding to climate displacement, it will not protect all climate-displaced individuals. There are few pathways for climate-displaced people to seek safety outside of their countries of origin. People internally displaced by climate-related events are reliant on their national government for protection, with systems varying widely from country to country. The lack of a reliable system of international protection for climate-displaced people presents urgent challenges for the region, underscoring the need for more inclusive approaches to safeguard the rights of those affected by the climate crisis.

This webinar highlights the urgent need to strengthen legal protection mechanisms for the most vulnerable populations and will generate inter-regional dialogue on strategies to develop stronger frameworks for protecting climate vulnerable people. The conversation brought together experts from Central America, Colombia, and the United States to analyze existing legal responses to climate displacement in the Americas. It explored how the law can protect people forced to leave their homes due to climate-related phenomena, such as rising sea levels, droughts, and natural disasters, as well as the situation of populations that cannot or prefer not to migrate.
