Policy Brief: The Largest Child Displacement Crisis in the World

By USCRI December 19, 2023

Today, children are engulfed in conflicts and crises around the world. Within situations of armed conflict, children suffer immense consequences of wars they had no hand in creating. In these contexts, children often endure some of the most severe acts of violence, encounter extreme protection risks, and are deprived of their basic rights. Conflict and violence are also primary drivers of forced displacement, with an unprecedented 43.3 million children displaced by the end of 2022. Despite how grim this figure is, it does not yet include the mass displacement that occurred and is ongoing in 2023, including the current largest child displacement crisis in the world – Sudan.

This brief details the widespread atrocities taking place in Sudan as well as the additional costs of conflict, including education loss and lack of healthcare, and provides recommendations for the global community.
