Termination of TPS for Cameroon and Nepal Puts Lives at Risk

June 10, 2025

Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cameroon (published June 4, effective August 4, 2025) and Nepal (published June 6, effective August 5, 2025). These actions disregard ongoing humanitarian crises and place thousands of lives at risk—individuals who have built families, contributed to the economy, and strengthened communities across the United States.

In Cameroon, escalating violence, targeted attacks on civilians, and widespread instability have displaced over 900,000 people internally and forced more than 60,000 to flee abroad. Armed conflict in the Anglophone regions has led to gross human rights violations, making a safe return impossible. Meanwhile, northern regions continue to face threats from extremist militant groups, and over 3 million people across the country need humanitarian assistance.

In Nepal, impacts of the 2015 earthquake—one of the deadliest natural disasters in the nation’s history—as well as catastrophic floods and landslides, continue to undermine recovery. Many communities still grapple with fragile infrastructure, economic instability, and heightened vulnerability to future disasters and climate-related crises.

ā€œTPS exists to protect people from precisely these types of extraordinary and temporary conditions,ā€ said USCRI President and CEO Eskinder Negash. ā€œTerminating TPS for Cameroonians and Nepalis not only contradicts the purpose of TPS, but it also puts individuals at risk of deportation, family separation, and undermines the safety and cohesion of our communities.ā€

USCRI urges the Administration to preserve and apply TPS as the lifesaving tool it was intended to be—for individuals whose lives are endangered by conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions.

USCRI, founded in 1911, is a non-governmental, not-for-profit international organization committed to working on behalf of refugees and immigrants and their transition to a dignified life.
