Building Community, Sharing Culture: USCRI Offices Celebrate World Refugee Day

July 2, 2025

World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, is a day dedicated to honoring the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees worldwide. It’s a time to raise awareness about the challenges refugees face and to celebrate their contributions to their new communities. USCRI field offices across the country held celebrations in their communities, raising awareness for the organization and sharing the cultures of those resettled.

Detroit

USCRI Detroit, partnering with Michigan State University (MSU), invited the most recently arrived refugee clients to the office for a presentation on nutrition, food safety, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The MSU instructor spoke about the basics of healthy eating, the benefits of a balanced diet and regular exercise, while also highlighting the risks associated with unhealthy habits. Clients enjoyed breakfast, information on other USCRI programs, and giveaways.

Raleigh

USCRI Raleigh held its annual World Refugee Day event, with approximately 600 clients, volunteers, and supporters in attendance. The highlight of the event was the soccer tournament, where seven teams representing different countries and diverse nationality groups competed to be named the champions. There was also a kids’ track race.

Twin Falls

USCRI Twin Falls celebrated cultural diversity with authentic foods and traditions from 11 nations—including Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, and Ukraine.

The event featured distinguished speakers, including Mayor Ruth Pierce, Chief of Police Matthew Hicks, and the CEO of the Idaho Dairymen’s Association Rick Naerebout.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Twin Falls team, over 250 community members came together in solidarity and set a new record by raising an incredible $70,000 at the event.

Vermont

USCRI Vermont celebrated World Refugee Day with delicious food, traditional dancers, face painting, music, and sports activities. Food and drinks were donated by Hannaford supermarket, Dunkin Donuts, Domino’s, American Flatbread, Champlain Chocolates, Chinese Grand Buffet restaurant, and USCRI staff.

Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak and State Refugee Coordinator Tracy Dolan attended and spoke at the event. Partners, the Northeast Organic Farming Association and Habitat for Humanity, tabled at the event, which was attended by over 200 refugees and new Americans.
