Rebuilding With Strength: Omar’s Story

June 30, 2026

*Omar arrived in Vermont in 2024 after a long journey — one made even harder by navigating the world without hearing or speech. He came with his father, who remains his closest anchor in an unfamiliar country. “My dad is at home all the time,” he says. “I want to take him outside.”

Their days are quiet but full of meaning. His father drives him to appointments and job searches. On good evenings, they make their way to the lake, where Omar finds peace in the long Vermont evenings.

Finding community beyond that bond has been harder. “Sometimes I feel isolated,” he shares. “But I practice. I pray. I keep going.”

After nearly two years of waiting, Omar proudly secured two jobs with support from USCRI Vermont. He finds strength in that progress — and in the freedom to express himself, move through the world, and belong to it.

What inclusion means to him: “Different people brought together.”

What helps him feel safe: Patience, kindness, and communication in all forms — gestures, texts, and understanding.

Omar’s story is one of millions. Nearly 120 million people are currently displaced globally, and the need for protection, opportunity, and belonging has never been greater. On World Refugee Day, USCRI marks 115 years of standing alongside people like Omar — refugees who are not defined by their displacement, but by their resilience, their contributions, and their humanity.

We’re still here. And so are they.
