Travel Loan Information
The Travel Loan Department of U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants would like to welcome you and your family to the United States of America. Soon, you will begin your transition to finding gainful employment, locating a residence, starting school, and repaying your travel loan. We have prepared the loan information to help you understand your travel loan account, and the possible outcomes in the future.
What is My Travel Loan?
Your travel loan is given to you by the International Organization of Migration (IOM) to transport you and your family to the United States. Before departing from your previous country, the promissory note was signed in your previous residence. Each travel loan equates to the amount of U.S. dollars on your promissory note. Your travel loan is interest free. This amount includes the airfare for all persons listed on the promissory note and is the responsibility of all persons over the age of 18. If you are married, both spouses are equally responsible for the loan.
How Do I Pay My Travel Loan?
Repayment of your travel loan begins 6 months after your arrival. You will receive a statement each month showing your Original Loan Amount, Current Balance, and Amount Due.
- Original Loan Amount is the total amount of your travel loan as shown on your promissory note.
- Current Balance is the total amount that is owed on your travel loan.
- Amount Due is the total amount that you need to pay for the current month.
- Your Due Date is the 10th of each month. Any payments received after the 10th will not reflect your current statement.

What If I Move?
Please check the little square box on your statement and indicate new address on the back. Your address and phone number will be updated. Please bear in mind you can contact the Travel Loan Department to notify of any address change as well.
What is a Credit Report?
Credit is the ability of the consumer to acquire goods or services prior to payment with the faith that the payment will be made in the future. The lender trusts that you will honor your obligation by making on time monthly payments. This information is reported to the Credit Bureau. A credit report is a statement that has information about your credit activity such as loan payment history and the status of your credit account. Your credit report is updated monthly, and the information will be retained for 7 years. Please be advised that payments are due every month. In addition, it represents your financial profile and your ability to obtain additional credit.
Your IOM travel loan is the beginning of your credit history.
