Amid Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Myanmar, Advocates Call for Extension and Redesignation of TPS

June 26, 2025

The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), Campaign for a New Myanmar, and 156 allied organizations are calling on the Administration to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Myanmar (Burma). As the humanitarian situation in Myanmar deteriorates, TPS offers life-saving protections to those who cannot safely return home.

TPS is a critical humanitarian tool that shields eligible individuals from deportation and provides work authorization when their home countries are experiencing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions. The crisis in Myanmar—including a recent devastating earthquake, ongoing violent conflict, religious persecution, mass displacement, and widespread human rights violations—constitutes the type of extraordinary and temporary conditions that warrant a TPS designation.

“The United States has a moral and legal obligation to protect those who cannot safely return to Myanmar,” said Eskinder Negash, President and CEO of USCRI. “Extending TPS now is not just compassionate—it’s essential. TPS offers necessary stability for Myanmar nationals who cannot return home. While they remain in the United States, TPS provides temporary but vital safety, allowing individuals and families to begin rebuilding their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”

The joint letter, sent to the Administration last week, has been endorsed by a broad coalition of 158 organizations—including religious freedom and faith-based institutions, Burmese diaspora groups, immigrant rights organizations, legal service providers, and community advocates.

No one should be forced to return to a country devastated by natural disaster, where they face the risk of human rights violations or becoming civilian casualties of war.
