They show up — rain, snow, sleet, and all

May 5, 2026

April was Volunteer Appreciation Month, and throughout the entire month, the USCRI Cleveland Field Office is proud to celebrate the incredible volunteers who walk alongside newcomers as they build new lives in Cleveland.

At the heart of this work are relationships — relationships rooted in welcome, trust, and compassion. During some of the most challenging times for newcomer communities, our volunteers show up not just to help but to consistently support families as they navigate new beginnings.

In 2025, USCRI Cleveland volunteers contributed over 2,000 hours of their time to welcome and support newcomers to Cleveland. Your compassion and dedication make our work possible — especially during these challenging times.

Stepping up in a time of crisis

One of the most powerful examples of volunteer commitment this year has been the response to growing food insecurity. Since many newcomers lost access to SNAP benefits, providing enough food for their families has become an overwhelming challenge — and USCRI volunteers stepped up without hesitation.

Since late 2024, in partnership with May Dugan, USCRI volunteers have been delivering groceries every week to families most in need. Volunteers pick up bags filled with pantry staples, fresh produce, and meat when available, then bring them directly to families’ homes.

They show up in rain, snow, sleet, and below-zero temperatures — making sure that families have food on their tables.

In just three short months, volunteers have completed 233 grocery deliveries, contributing over 150 hours of service. They arrive with a smile, sometimes extra food or a winter coat and hat, often a hug — and always compassion. Most importantly, they make sure each family knows that someone cares.

Impact that lives beyond the hours

We could not do this work without you. The impact our volunteers make goes far beyond hours logged or tasks completed — it lives in the relationships built and the dignity, care, and belonging created every single day.
