Advocating for the Chance to Learn

October 30, 2026

Education is a basic human right. Education plays an invaluable role in life, empowerment, and livelihoods, yet so many displaced children and young adults are forced to put their education on pause. When fleeing from disaster or conflict, school books are left behind. Upon arriving in displacement camps, the need for food and shelter take precedent. Schools and teachers are often in short supply or defunded altogether due to aid cuts.

Over the years, USCRI has integrated the right to education into its advocacy for refugees and immigrants. The Policy & Advocacy program shared what we heard from children in Kenya’s refugee camps and settlements about the need for menstrual hygiene products to make staying in school possible. Our findings contributed to the strength of the Keep Girls Dreaming initiative, which provides unaccompanied girls and their foster families with case management, food assistance, menstrual hygiene products, and school supplies.

We have taken a deep dive into access to education for asylum seekers in Mexico. We are also learning from partners who are working to make education accessible to refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Busuma, environments where international support is dwindling.

In sharing these policy reports and advocacy perspectives, USCRI also commits to contributing to a better future for children, adults, and families. Join us in our pursuit by keeping up to date with our Policy & Advocacy program, following our Legal Landscape updates, and getting the latest on our website.
