FROM UNCERTAINTY TO HOPE: REFUGEE YOUTH COMPLETE SPANISH TRAINING AND BEGIN UNIVERSITY IN MEXICO

August 11, 2025

Pursuing a university degree once seemed like a distant dream for Ibrahim, Elham, Alek, Abed, Mamer, Mohammed, Adau, and Freedom. Just over a year ago, they received life-changing news: they had been selected for the Habesha Project scholarship and would soon travel to Mexico to begin a new chapter.

After receiving support throughout their journey—including the completion of the necessary legal paperwork—they settled in the city of Aguascalientes, where they began a one-year Spanish language and cultural training program. Each arrived with a different story—some from the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, others from communities in Jordan where they had taken refuge after fleeing Syria—but all shared a common goal: to leave behind the horrors of war and violence and begin writing the first chapter of a new life, one where they could find peace of mind and the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

Naturally, starting over in a new country—without knowing the language and in a culture unfamiliar to their own—is a journey full of challenges. However, with the support of USCRI staff and our partners, we accompanied the students throughout their adaptation process, helping them adjust to their new lives.

Now, after completing their Spanish language and cultural training, the students are ready to take the next big step: beginning their college journey in Mexico. This marks the most challenging and exciting chapter since their arrival, as they transition into university life and pursue their academic goals.

At USCRI, we are incredibly proud of their progress. We wish them continued success and remain committed to supporting them every step of the way.
