Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Declares June Immigration Heritage Month

June 2, 2020

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared June, “Immigration Heritage Month.” By taking time out from managing a public health crisis, Governor Whitmer is making a powerful statement about the immense contributions immigrants have made to the State of Michigan and to the United States in general.

“Governor Whitmer and her staff have supported USCRI’s work in giving a hand up to newly settled refugees and other immigrants throughout our state, said USCRI Michigan Field Office Director Tawfik Alazem. We are honored by her recognition.”

The text of the Certificate of Proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, generations of immigrants have settled in the United States from every corner of the globe and have built our country’s economy; and,

WHEREAS, immigrants continue to grow businesses, offer innovate ideas, strengthen our economy, and create jobs in Michigan; and,

WHEREAS, immigrants have provided Michigan and the United States with unique social and cultural influence, fundamentally enriching the extraordinary character of our state and nation; and,

WHEREAS, immigrants have been tireless leaders not only in securing their own rights and access to equal opportunity, but also in campaigning to create a more fair and just society for all Americans.

Thank you, Governor Whitmer, for your support of refugees and immigrants.
