Protections Extended for Individuals from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela

January 13, 2025

On January 10, the Administration announced extensions of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible individuals from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) applauds these extensions as a critical tool to provide stability and protection for nearly one million people whose home countries are experiencing extreme hardships including war, political instability, and environmental disasters.

The 18-month extension of TPS for Sudanese nationals is crucial as the country remains gripped by a war that has caused famine and the largest displacement crisis in the world. Similarly, Ukraine’s 18-month TPS extension is a vital response to the ongoing war and resulting mass displacement and destruction. Conditions from environmental disasters warranted an 18-month TPS extension for El Salvador. Approximately 600,000 eligible current beneficiaries from Venezuela can retain TPS under the new 18-month extension as humanitarian, political, and economic crises in the country continue.

“The Administration’s decision to uphold this form of protection illuminates our nation’s commitment to human rights and humanitarian relief,” stated USCRI President and CEO Eskinder Negash. “These near one million people are not a statistic—they are individuals who have enriched our communities, contributed to the economy, and woven family ties.”

Many TPS beneficiaries have lived in the United States for years. Continuing to provide stability is a recognition of the immense value they bring to our country.

“The United States cannot abandon its long-standing values of support and compassion,” remarked Negash. “The Government should continue to extend and also redesignate TPS for nations experiencing extraordinary challenges.”

USCRI, founded in 1911, is a non-governmental, not-for-profit international organization committed to working on behalf of refugees and immigrants and their transition to a dignified life.
