There are more than 43 million refugees worldwide, and the need for action has never been more urgent. Refugees have fled war, ethnic cleansing, and unimaginable suffering, holding on to the hope that countries like the United States will offer safety and an opportunity for a second chance at life.
Yet recent executive actions have indefinitely suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, dismantling a program that has been in place for nearly 45 years. Since 1980, the United States has safely resettled over three million refugees. This sudden renunciation of responsibility jeopardizes the lives of countless refugees and U.S. moral leadership in offering safety to those in need.
We can’t allow this to continue. The Lady Liberty Act provides a pathway to restore the refugee program, reaffirming our nation’s responsibility to protect the world’s most vulnerable. Now more than ever, we need you to act.
