USCRI Urges the Current Administration to Continue Evacuations from Afghanistan

Arlington, VAThis very moment, tens of thousands of Afghans are desperately trying to flee the fundamentalist and oppressive rule of the Taliban, and resettle in the United States. Yet, the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, particularly in the capital city of Kabul, has made it extremely challenging for any American-affiliated or vulnerable Afghan to do so.

The current Administration has chosen to maintain its August 31st deadline to draw-down troops that are currently managing evacuations at the Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul. This deadline makes the evacuation of all those in need nearly impossible. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), in coalition with many other organizations advocating for the rights and safety of refugees, strongly urges the Administration to extend the deadline until all at-risk Afghans can be evacuated from Afghanistan.

For more than a century, USCRI has been committed to ensuring immigrants, refugees, and displaced people around the world lead safe and dignified lives. We encourage the Administration to keep its promise of safety not just to Afghans who supported the US military and diplomatic corps directly, but to all Afghans currently in danger at the hands of the new regime. “The United States’ commitment to Afghans is more than a simple promise,” says Eskinder Negash, President and CEO of USCRI, “it is a moral imperative that we prevent harm from coming to those in dire need of protection.”
