WELCOMING COMMUNITIES PLAY KEY ROLE AS REFUGEE YOUTH BEGIN ACADEMIC LIFE IN MEXICO

September 11, 2025

Welcoming communities play a fundamental role in the integration of migrants and refugees. For many refugee students, arriving in a new country means facing a host of challenges: adapting to unfamiliar cultural norms, navigating a different educational system, overcoming language barriers, and coping with the emotional toll of displacement and separation from family. In this context, USCRI student committees are essential in supporting Habesha Project students as they adapt to their new realities—a different school environment, an unfamiliar city, and a new community filled with both opportunities and uncertainties.

One example of these efforts is the work carried out by volunteer members of the Carolina University Committee in Saltillo, Mexico, to support Ibrahim, Mamer, and Adau upon their arrival in the city, where they are beginning their new academic journey.

Access to education is not only a fundamental human right—it is also a powerful tool for rebuilding lives, restoring hope, and creating lasting change. Universities like Carolina University in Saltillo serve as critical spaces for integration, empowerment, and social inclusion, enabling refugee students to develop their full potential while enriching academic communities with their experiences, perspectives, and resilience.

By opening their doors and fostering a culture of solidarity, higher education institutions become drivers of opportunity and peace, helping transform displacement into possibility.
