USCRI Concerned About Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, Urges the Administration to Prevent Climate-Induced Displacement

January 23, 2025

The Administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement will exacerbate the climate emergency. As temperatures rise and large swathes of land become unhabitable, more and more people will be driven from their homes, forced to seek safety elsewhere.

For the increasing numbers of people who will find themselves fleeing climate-related environmental disasters, there is no adequate system of international protection. Internally displaced people are reliant on national legal frameworks for support, with systems varying widely from country to country.

To prevent forced displacement, a robust climate change mitigation strategy is essential. Most people, particularly Indigenous communities with an ancestral connection to their land, do not want to leave their homes behind. But rising temperatures—an additional 2 degrees Celsius since the Industrial Revolution—threaten the land’s ability to support human life. The Paris Agreement provides a clear framework to curtail global greenhouse emissions.

“To address climate emergencies, we must reckon with the injustices that environmental damage renders upon the world’s most marginalized and vulnerable populations,” says USCRI’s President and CEO Eskinder Negash. “Our withdrawal from the Paris Agreement damages our ability to prevent the conditions behind forced migration.”

Since the turn of the 20th century, USCRI has advocated for displaced communities. We have campaigned to end refugee warehousing, reported on conditions in six continents, and resettled the U.S.’ Afghan allies in the wake of the Fall of Kabul. This legacy has prepared us to confront the challenges of the 21st century, including climate emergencies. We stand strongly in support of people displaced by climate-related environmental disasters.

USCRI, founded in 1911, is a non-governmental, not-for-profit international organization committed to working on behalf of refugees and immigrants and their transition to a dignified life.
