USCRI Recommends TPS Designation for Cameroon

February 17, 2022

The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State are currently considering a designation of Temporary Protected Status for Cameroonians in the U.S.

USCRI implores the Biden administration to designate TPS for Cameroon. The ongoing armed conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone region has killed more than 4,000 and displaced more than 700,000 civilians. “The Administration should immediately designate TPS for Cameroon given the qualifications for a TPS designation are clearly met,” states USCRI President and CEO Eskinder Negash. “The U.S. should not deport Cameroonians back to dangerous conditions which pose a threat to their safety.”

A Human Rights Watch report published this month details how the Trump administration deported Cameroonians with credible asylum claims, violating the principle of nonrefoulement.

USCRI is committed to ensuring immigrants, refugees, and displaced people worldwide lead safe and dignified lives. We urge the Administration to protect the rights of Cameroonians and not return them to likely persecution, torture and other human rights abuses.

The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is an international non-governmental organization that has advocated for the human rights of refugees and immigrants for 110 years.
