A Remarkable 2024 for Habesha Project

December 10, 2024

This year has been marked by significant milestones in the advancement of the right to access higher education for refugees in Mexico through the Habesha Americas and Habesha Complementary Pathways programs.

From Habesha Complementary Pathways:

In March, we welcomed four students selected in 2023 from Kenya after extensive logistical efforts in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). Throughout the year, these talented students successfully completed their intensive Spanish courses, achieving a B2 proficiency level. They are now prepared to embark on their university journey starting in January 2025.

In March, we extended three Calls for Applications to Jordan, Lebanon, and Kenya After a rigorous selection process, we welcomed eight outstanding students: three Syrian youth living in Lebanon and Jordan, and  five refugee youth from Kenya, representing Syrian, Somali, and South Sudanese nationalities.

These students arrived in Mexico between September and November of this year, marking the beginning of their one-year integration and Spanish language program. Their arrival was made possible through the invaluable support of UNHCR offices in different countries and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). A special acknowledgement goes to USCRI Kenya, whose on-the-ground efforts played a crucial role by providing direct support and guidance to Habesha Protection Scholarship recipients.

From Habesha Americas:

Through our partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE), three talented students were accepted to Mexican universities: Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO) in Guadalajara, La Salle Saltillo, and Marista de Querétaro. These students are now fully immersed in their respective institutions.

We closed the year with a total of 46 students enrolled overall. Furthermore,12 students will be graduating with bachelor’s degrees by the end of the year – the highest number of graduations in a single year in the history of the program. As we look forward to 2025, we look forward to continuing to work towards expanding access to higher education for refugees from all over the world.
