BREAKING GROUND WHEN OTHERS CLOSE THEMSELVES OFF

May 11, 2026

Globally, protection and integration pathways for refugees and asylum seekers have narrowed significantly.

In the United States of America, the 2025 suspension of the Welcome Corps on Campus initiative, which allowed U.S. universities to sponsor the resettlement of refugee students, deprived many refugee youth in Kakuma, Kenya, of the opportunity to access higher education. On the other hand, in Latin America, there are more than 20 million forcibly displaced or stateless people who have seen their life projects interrupted by displacement.

In this context, last Friday, May 1, USCRI Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Shapiro Foundation, launched the new calls for Project Habesha, reaffirming our commitment to continue accompanying refugees to rebuild their trajectories beyond displacement.

We hope to select 6 participants in Colombia, 2 in Mexico, and 2 in the refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, to pursue a Higher University Technician program in Mexico.

Through these new calls for higher education for refugees, we hope to build safe, legal, and sustainable pathways that allow people not only to find safety but also to continue building their futures on their own terms.
