Higher education opportunities in Mexico for refugees from around the world.

Higher education opportunities in Mexico for refugees from around the world The Habesha Complementary Pathways and Habesha Americas programs promote higher education opportunities to young, displaced persons and refugees from around the world. In partnership with the Mexican Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), both programs promote a comprehensive model to international protection and local integration through academic scholarships in Mexico. Aligned with the Global Compact on Refugees and UNHCR’s strategy to increase refugees’ access to higher education from 5% to 15% by 2030, these programs provide durable solutions for refugee youth.

After fleeing Syria in 2013, Abed lived in Lebanon as a refugee for 11 years. Due to a lack of available durable solutions and educational opportunities, Abed applied for a scholarship through the Habesha Project. In September 2024, he arrived in Mexico with the goal of studying design and beginning a new life.
