Call to Action: Tell Your U.S. Representative to Support the Rohingya GAP Act

By USCRI July 25, 2024

Dear colleagues,

Since October 2023, resistance forces in Myanmar have gained territorial control across different parts of Myanmar. And Myanmar’s de facto authorities have routinely punished civilians they view as supporting that opposition. This escalating armed conflict has led to deepening humanitarian need, high poverty levels, violence against civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and civilian casualties.

Rohingya populations are particularly vulnerable due to a long history of persecution, limited mobility, and limited access to aid. In Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State, the Rohingya population faces increasingly brutal abuses at the hands of both the military junta and the Arakan Army (AA). The violence and oppression are reminiscent of what Rohingya experienced at the hands of the military back in 2017, which triggered the mass exodus of over 700,000 Rohingya into neighboring Bangladesh.

You can help the people of Myanmar and Rohingya refugees by telling your Members of Congress to support needed funding for Myanmar and the Rohingya Genocide, Accountability, and Protection (GAP) Act.

Tell Your U.S. Senators to Support Needed Funding for Myanmar

As Congress prepares the Fiscal Year 2025 Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs (SFOPS) appropriations budget, the United States must prioritize funding pro-democracy stakeholders in Myanmar and provide life-saving aid.

Take action today and tell your Senators to provide robust funding for Myanmar and Rohingya-related programs, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the FY25 SFOPS appropriations.

Tell Your U.S. Representative to Support the Rohingya GAP Act

The Rohingya Genocide, Accountability, and Protection (GAP) Act (H.R.8936) would provide protection, support, and humanitarian assistance to Rohingya refugees and internally displaced persons. It also promotes accountability and a path out of genocide and crimes against humanity for the Rohingya.
