The Keynote Editorial ‘Still Standing’ convenes the insights of experts on the current migration landscape

April 3, 2026

The Keynote Editorial “Still Standing” provides a platform that brings together diverse voices from academia, civil society organizations, and government institutions to share their perspectives on the historical and current context of migration. This dialogue initiative aims to broaden USCRI’s approach to the challenges confronting people in displacement settings while fostering the exchange of multiple perspectives on historical and contemporary migration dynamics, enabling joint problem-solving.

Since its launch at the end of last year, the dialogue series has brought together 16 participants from a variety of organizations, including officials from Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), researchers from El Colegio de México and the University of El Salvador, as well as representatives from organizations such as Higher Education Initiatives at the Community Sponsorship Hub (CSH). Participants have shared their expertise from diverse perspectives, raising new questions that help us gain a broader understanding of the migration landscape.

This month, we welcomed the following guests:

  • Steve Mason, CEO of World University Service of Canada (WUSC), who shared his perspective on the current migration context and the role of higher education as a tool for protection.
  • Aída Chavez, Global Manager at Talent Beyond Boundaries, who discussed how labor mobility can serve as one of the most practical solutions in the face of border closures.
  • Rachel Schmidtke and Yael Schacher from Refugees International, who presented an overview of their latest research: Protection, Not Concession: Mexico’s Responsibility to Third-Country Nationals Deported by the United States.
