USCRI Cleveland: Reprise ’23

By USCRI October 23, 2023

This month, USCRI Cleveland hosted their sold-out inaugural benefit concert at Cleveland Public Theatre‘ s Gordon Square Theatre.

Reprise ‘23 featured performances from refugee musicians as well as food prepared by members of the refugee community. More than 300 people attended, including donors, volunteers, politicians, strategic partners, and refugee community members.

Thank you to the incredible artists for sharing their culture and talents with us.

Panche Baja Team, who perform traditional Nepalese music typically reserved for special religious ceremonies. Members come from across Ohio to perform on traditional woodwind and percussion instruments.

Heart of Afghanistan, featuring the Fanoos Ensemble- famed singer and Afghan TV star Ahmad Fanoos on vocals and harmonium, his sons Elham Fanoos on piano and Mehran Fanoos on violin, and Hewad Wardak on tabla. Since the Taliban banned all music, this group is unable to perform inside of Afghanistan. They carry the flame of Afghanistan’s rich and complex musical heritage, from its pre-Islamic Buddhist period to the modern era.

The U4U Band, which comprises of Ukrainian refugees resettled in northeast Ohio, all of whom were professional performers prior to their displacement. Their repertoire comes from the soul of Ukraine, combining contemporary and traditional hits that reflect the spirit and resilience of a country under siege.

Shacko & Akim, twin brothers Jacob Shacko and Akim Brayan, who fled their homeland as children and came of age in a refugee camp, where they started their first band. Through every song, Shacko & Akim take us with them on their musical journey from a mountain village in Congo to a multi-cultural urban center in America. Singing mostly in their native tongue, these songs connect immediately with an audience of more than 200 million Swahili speakers around the world.

Thank you to all our amazing sponsors, Community West Foundation, Cleveland Public Theatre, IHOP, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, FullColorPrintings.com, Janus Small Associates and Mitri Properties LLC for believing in our cause and standing with us to celebrate refugees and make a positive impact on our community. Your support means the world to us!

We hope to see even more of you there next year to share in the rich and diverse cultures that make Cleveland the amazing city it is.
